Meet the Elderlearners

Mr. NK
Living in Lebanon for most of his life, Mr. NK studied chemical and biological sciences and became a food scientist. Working as an official for the Lebanese health department, he focused on food policy and regulation in much for much of his career. His background and obvious interest in our subject made for lively discussions and fascinating learning.

Mr. BH and Ms. PM
She traveled with the military around the world. He grew up on a farm. They both live in England part of the time and the United States at the other. Both knew of almost every kind of food we pointed out at the international market.

Mrs. CH
Making a point to come to almost every class and the farm tour, Mrs. CH always had thoughtful comments and seemed genuinely interested in what we were learning. She bought the farmer's book, was the first to buy unique items at the places we visited, and demonstrated an evident thoughtfullness toward all the other students.

Mrs. MS
A grandmother with adult children and little grandkids all counting on her to cook authentic Mexican dishes for weddings and family get-to-gethers, she brought quiet smiles and an appreciation for richness of food in human life.

Mrs. EC
Though unable to join us every class, Mrs. EC always seemed to enjoy the chance to just get away by being a part of our class.

Mrs. JN
One of the most cheerful members of our little club, Mrs. JN always encouraged everyone else in class. She brought enthusiasm and intelligent questions to our discussions. She imparted her cheerful outlook with conviction. Her husband had always done their cooking, and she had never learned the principles spoken about in class. It was apparent from her expressions how new, bewildering, surprising, redefining much of the information was to her.

We had a number of other members of the center come to the first or second class, but the seven individuals introduced above consistently came throughout the rest of the class.
